The Need for Needles

Here is a sampling of the needle cases I found while going through Ginny's things a few months ago.

Just looking at the pictures on them takes me to a time I never knew firsthand but find terribly fascinating anyway.

Ladies actually knew how to sew...by HAND, no less.

It was not only necessary to mend torn or heavily worn items (you didn't just run out and replace things the way we do now) it was a wonderful way to socialize.

Many a quilt was born of not only the need to stay warm, but also the desire to spend time with others, to enjoy conversation and even to teach others this now fading art.

Aren't these just the sweetest things? They make me daydream of the lady who bought them and all the things she probably mended, quilted and created with them.

  1. I love vintage needle cases. They are so evocative of a time and work ethic so long past.

  2. Sometimes I beat myself up for never having learned to sew on a machine, but one thing I can do is sew by hand. Yay for me!

  3. Oh Kelli, what memories they bring! My grandmother taught me to make doll clothes when I was 9 years old and I am so thankful to her. I've made my own clothes, up until just recently, from the age of 12 on... I have her button box and her sewing box and wouldn't trade for them! You are right, hand sewing is a lost art.

  4. I don't know why they don't use graphics like that on things now. These are so pretty. I used to sew alot when I was growing up. It's almost a shame that it's easier to buy it in a store now.
